Essential Job Duties |
The Computer Science department at North Carolina State University (NCSU) invites applications for a Cybersecurity Software Engineer and Research Coordinator. The position will exist within the Secure Software Supply Chain Center (S3C2) funded by the National Science Foundation that is part of the Secure Computing Institute (SCI) led by Drs. Laurie Williams and William Enck. S3C2 is a large-scale multi-institutional research enterprise and community responding to the rise in software supply chain attacks in the software industry (as emphasized in Section 4 of Executive Order 14028). S3C2 is an international leader in software supply chain security research and an essential community catalyst for secure development methods, tools, and metrics that are adopted by practitioners and that re-establish trust in the software supply chain; and educates a varied workforce of technical leaders and practitioners. S3C2 includes NCSU faculty and collaborators at Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Maryland, and Paderborn University (in Germany). The successful candidates will demonstrate good knowledge of programming and cybersecurity; exhibit leadership and organization skills; have a propensity for working with students; and have an interest in cybersecurity research. Primary responsibilities will include (1) conducting the ecosystem/industry-wide data collection and analysis and writing the annual industry-wide software supply chain barometer report; (2) coordinating industry outreach with technical security professionals; (3) generating and maintaining externally-facing center materials, including a website, reports, and presentations; (4) storing data and experimental results in accordance with the data management plan; and (5) coordinating and participating in professional and student outreach activities. Annual industry-wide software supply chain barometer report: The Cybersecurity Software Engineer and Research Coordinator will own the production of an annual industry-wide report and dashboard that communicates measurements about the state of security in the software supply chain at the ecosystem and industry level. These measurements will feed back into S3C2 research. The production of the report will necessitate writing scripts to analyze security and mitigation approach trends at the ecosystem level. These scripts will be contributed to the open source community. Community outreach coordinator: The Cybersecurity Software Engineer and Research Coordinator will be a liaison with technical industry and government partners. S3C2 maintains continuous interaction with practitioners in industry and government to propel broader impacts on the software industry and the security of software products. S3C2 research is fueled by a fundamental understanding of the workflow and attitudes of practitioners as secure software supply chain practices are adopted (or not). The center will learn about pressing challenges and obtain feedback on research contributions through three annual Secure Software Supply Chain Summits and one community outreach day which will be organized by the Cybersecurity Software Engineer and Research Coordinator. Center materials and reports: The Cybersecurity Software Engineer and Research Coordinator will work with S3C2 personnel to collect status, achievements, and highlights that will be disseminated via reports to the National Science Foundation, the S3C2 website, and an up-to-date S3C2 presentation. The Cybersecurity Software Engineer and Research Coordinator will also interface with university financial departments and will manage the budget in conjunction with the S3C2 director. Maintaining data and experimental results: The Cybersecurity Software Engineer and Research Coordinator will provide support for maintaining the data corpus and experimental results produced by the S3C2 researchers in accordance with the data management plan. Student outreach: To raise cybersecurity interest and preparation of a diverse set of students, S3C2 sites will conduct monthly middle-school workshops, an annual summer camp, and research experiences for undergraduates related to technical computer science and cybersecurity topics. The Cybersecurity Software Engineer and Research Coordinator will participate in these activities at NCSU and coordinate best practices and resources across S3C2 collaborating sites.
