The Department of Art & Art History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a tenure-track
faculty position in Sculpture and expanded fields at the rank of Assistant Professor with a start date of July 1, 2024. The position is a
full-time, nine-month academic year appointment.
The successful candidate will have a dynamic studio practice and will have the
ability to teach a range of undergraduate courses. They will also mentor graduate students working across disciplines and collaborate with
faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds. Central teaching responsibilities will be in all levels of Sculpture, with additional
opportunities to teach interdisciplinary courses such as first year seminars, graduate seminars and experimental courses.
We invite
applicants to approach sculpture broadly as a discursive medium, recognizing its multifaced role at the intersection of technical,
theoretical, political, and historical dimensions. We seek candidates whose creative practices and teaching are rooted in the evolution of
contemporary art and interdisciplinary approaches to art practice, seeing value in rethinking conventional art curricula and being
interested in developing new pedagogies—from the foundational to the material with an eye to inclusion and anti-racism, as an
extension of Sculpture’s ever-expanding definition. This colleague will collaborate in shaping the future of Sculpture and Expanded
Fields at the University. We welcome candidates with an interdisciplinary practice that might include performance, installation, social
practice, technology, and/or mixed media.
The teaching load for tenure/tenure track is two courses per semester, and all studio
faculty serve on 2-3 MFA graduate committees per year. Our service responsibilities include departmental committee contributions, advising,
and participation in shared governance. In addition to teaching and service responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to
demonstrate a commitment to a sustained and developing creative practice, with an active and ongoing exhibition and/or publishing
record.
