Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Financial Aid, the VA Benefits and Financial Aid Counselor is responsible for providing financial aid support to prospective and current students, with an emphasis on veterans, their families, and adult/non-traditional students. The VA Benefits and Financial Aid Counselor will serve as the Veterans Association (VA) School Certifying Official (SCO) for students using VA Educational benefits and coordinating the operating hours of “the Bunker,” veterans’ space on campus. Responsibilities also include the processing of student financial aid applications and advising students on application procedures and eligibility criteria, including for Massachusetts financial aid initiatives (such as MassGrant, MassGrant Plus, and MassReconnect), hosting workshops on and off campus, and collaborating with other key enrollment areas in support enrollment goals. This individual will partner with Senior Financial Aid Counselors to promote services available in the Financial Aid Office.
Advises veterans and military-affiliated students about VA benefits, determines eligibility, and provides instructions for VA education benefits.Monitors student enrollment, records, billing and academic progress to assess for VA certification guidelines. Using the Department of Veterans Affairs Enrollment Manager software, certify enrollments and adjustments, certify tuition and fees, monitor and report veteran and military-affiliated student’s academic progress and graduation.Ensure all veterans and military-affiliated students are certified in a timely manner.Review internal and VA reports for the accuracy of the information and make adjustments as necessary.Coordinate operating hours and assigned staff for the veterans’ space (“the Bunker”) and VA work study students.In collaboration with Student Accounts, ensure all waivers and Post 9-11 funding is accurately assessed and posted to student accounts.Completes annual VA School Certifying Official and other training.Provides support to Senior Financial Aid Counselors for on- and off-campus financial aid workshops and presentations which may involve evenings and weekends. Assist with the general management of the College’s financial aid programs, which will include creating/updating policies and procedures, providing feedback on existing policies and procedures, assisting classified staff, and providing staff training on pertinent issues.Process a caseload of financial aid applicants, including assessing the applicant’s eligibility for federal, state, and institutional financial aid, verifying applicants’ reported data, making necessary corrections, determining the types/amounts of financial aid to offer based on packaging policies, and revising current financial aid awards for changes in enrollment, loss of eligibility, etc.Provide counseling to returning and prospective students on financial aid matters. Meet with students in the office, respond to office email inquiries, design and deliver Financial Aid Labs.Utilize EAB Navigate, Banner, Degree Works, and Online Services to track success metrics, enhance veteran and financial aid service strategies, and activities and to support student enrollment and success.Collects data and ensures proper tracking is in place for all initiatives, events, and activities, including data entry for future analysis and planning. Reviews evaluations/feedback and makes recommendations for continuous improvement.Assist with phone and counter for backup coverage during busy times (lunches, breaks, vacations, and other high volume periods, which may include evenings and weekends.Collaborate with El Centro, TRIO, SAMP, ALANA, Admissions, New Directions/Marieb Adult Learner Success Center, and Advising to create comprehensive recruitment and enrollment support activities (ex. Financial Aid Labs).Perform special projects and related responsibilities as initiated and requested.
