The Department of Communication Studies is one of the largest majors in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The Communication Studies discipline focuses on the theoretical, critical, and scientific study of how humans practice and understand communication in all of its forms.

Description of Work:

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a tenure-track position in health and medical communication at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 15, 2024. Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in Communication Studies or a related area, along with the demonstration of:● An active research agenda that can lead to significant publications and external grants● The ability to teach courses in the theory, research, and practice of communication studies,
with a topical focus in health● A commitment and ability to work with a diverse student population of undergraduate and
graduate students● Dedication to interdisciplinary work and inter-university research opportunitiesThe department seeks a versatile scholar who excels in an interdisciplinary environment, both within the department and on campus more broadly. We welcome applications from candidates with research interests in health and are open to scholars who are situated within or across any of the concentration areas in the department, including: health communication; organizational communication; media and technology studies; rhetoric, culture, and social change; and/or public relations. Ideally, the successful candidate should have familiarity with quantitative, mixed, critical, or emerging methodologies; demonstrate potential for community-engaged scholarship; and align their research with one or more of the university’s Research Areas of Focus and Distinction, including but not limited to socioeconomic mobility, urban health, migration and diaspora studies. They should be able to participate in multidisciplinary teams in the college and at the university and demonstrate potential for collaborations with faculty in the department that support the University’s “top tier” research mission.The department also seeks a committed teacher who can situate themselves within the university’s Strategic Plan, which has a particular focus on engaging a diverse student body that includes many first generation, transfer, military, working, and non-traditional students. Finalists will be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage students of different ages, races, ethnicities, backgrounds, identities, and abilities, helping to remove barriers in order to ensure the success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the university. Successful candidates will teach undergraduate and Master’s students in the Department of Communication Studies. The standard teaching load is two classes each semester during the probationary period. Depending on scholarly interest, candidates may affiliate with doctoral programs (e.g., Organizational Science, Health Psychology, Public Health Sciences) or undergraduate programs (e.g., Data Science, Health and Medical Humanities, Capitalism Studies).
Minimum Experience/Education:
UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.
