Job Summary: The Academic Advisor I is an entry level advising position. Under direct supervision, the Advisor I will be engaged in academic advising activities that support UA at the institution or college level.
Additional Department Summary: The Engineering Advisor for Online Services works with a team of academic advisors to guide distance learning students through the educational process at The University. Uses appropriate advising practices and theories while working with distance learning students to foster academic success. Advises distance learning students in course and major selection by communicating general education, College of Engineering, and major requirements. Communicates accurate and timely information. Clarifies University policies and procedures. Presents and assists with new student and transfer orientation sessions. Creates an environment where students are encouraged to learn, grow and utilize institutional resources. Communicates with their online students based on the student’s needs primarily through Zoom, phone, and email communication. Works from campus. Travels, including occasional evenings, to recruit for the college. Seeks opportunities to learn about the advising profession and contribute to the College of Engineering Advising Team and The University of Alabama.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and some experience. Student or Graduate Assistant, Intern, or student oriented experience will be considered.
Skills and Knowledge: Current knowledge of best practices in advising and other programs promoting student success and retention of distance learning students. Understanding of the higher education environment specifically related to Distance Learning. Ability to work with a diverse population. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Public speaking skills. Computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, and database management). Good planning, coordinating, and organizational skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to read and interpret policies and procedures. Strong time management skills and work ethic. Ability to be available and flexible when communication with distance learning students.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in education, instructional technology, communications, or business. Experience with database management. Experience with customer relationship management systems. Experience with UA systems (i.e. Banner, SARS, OnBase).
