The Departments of Surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the University of Toronto are inviting applications for the position of Chief, Blake and Belinda Goldring Department of Surgery. The successful applicant will also hold the Blake Goldring Chair in Surgery of the Surgeon-in-Chief at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. This position is for a 5-year term, renewable once, following a successful review. Applicants must hold, or be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2024, or as mutually agreed upon. The successful candidate will be a transformational leader with outstanding interpersonal skills. Working with the Heads of the Divisions, the Chief will be responsible for providing institutional leadership relating the Department of Surgery to hospital strategic planning; and working with the Operations Director of OR and Related Services and the Chief of Anesthesia, for ensuring effective and efficient Department operations. Applicants will hold an MD degree and have certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent qualification, in one of the surgical specialties and be eligible for medical licensure in Ontario (CPSO). The successful candidate will have the vision to advance integration with Sunnybrook strategic priorities as well as with the broader community; the commitment to forging partnerships with other institutions to support the development of integrated delivery systems; experience working in diverse populations; demonstrated commitment to advancing inclusive, psychologically, and culturally safe learning and workplace environments that promote healthcare professional wellbeing, equity and diversity, and to nurturing an ethos of culturally-sensitive care; strong leadership capabilities, significant experience as an effective and generous mentor to trainees and faculty at all stages of their careers; a record of peer-reviewed research; leadership in undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowship, continuing medical education or patient education; and/or leadership in model service delivery as a creative professional academic activity. Sunnybrook’s Strategic Plan 2021-25 emphasizes the essential role that Sunnybrook plays, not only through its tertiary regional and provincial programs, but also supporting the community needs of the North Toronto Ontario Health Team. The Blake & Belinda Goldring Department of Surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is comprised of over 70 surgeons across multiple divisions. All Department members are fully affiliated with the University of Toronto Department of Surgery. Surgical activity occurs over two sites: 2075 Bayview Avenue and the Holland Centre (43 Wellesley St East). The Department is also home to Sunnybrook’s trauma centre, the largest trauma centre in Canada and the Ross Tilley Burn Centre. Many of our surgeons work within the Odette Cancer Centre, the sixth largest cancer centre in North America. Members of the Divisions of Vascular and Cardiac Surgery are engaged in advancing minimally invasive therapy for complex lower extremity, aortic, and structural heart disease through the Schulich Heart Centre. Sunnybrook, through the Holland Bone and Joint Program has a major focus on arthroplasty, performing over 2,000 hip and knee replacements annually. This specialized surgical care in the areas of trauma, burns, cardiovascular disease, and cancer is heavily aligned with the mission of Sunnybrook — caring for our patients and their families, when it matters most. Estimated remuneration (combination of clinical earnings and administrative stipend) will be in the range of $500,000 -$700,000 annually commensurate with academic rank, qualifications and experience.
