The Chief Operating and Financial Officer of Wharton is a key thought partner to the Dean, charged with strategically developing and executing on the School’s operational and financial resources in fulfillment of its strategic plan.

Job Responsibilities
The COO and CFO will be part of Wharton’s senior leadership team, responsible for both the day-to-day operations and long-term strategic planning of the School that enhances the academic and research experience of faculty, students, staff, alumni, program participants, and the local community. The COO and CFO will play a key role in furthering Dean Erika James’ vision for The Wharton School: The Wharton Way. The COO and CFO will assume administrative responsibility over operational
areas that support the infrastructure and financial health of Wharton’s Philadelphia and San Francisco campuses, along with additional global activities and strategies, totaling over one million square feet of real estate. The COO and CFO will be responsible for direct management of a $600M annual budget and approximately 300 staff, with the ability to lead and influence in a matrixed organization. Seen as a critical leader deeply involved in Wharton’s expansion in new programs, geographies, and physical spaces, this person will be seen as a key enabler of the business decisions that allow Wharton to advance and enable the innovation for which it is known around the globe. Additionally, and critically important: the COO and CFO will be a strong agent of change and will lead a significant transformational effort as Wharton evolves to meet the changing needs of higher education and business, in alignment with The Wharton Way. The successful candidate must be capable of providing powerful leadership in the development and execution of strategies, approaches, and solutions that address complex, multi-factor financial, and operational issues, both short- and long-term.

Qualifications
A master’s degree and 10+ years of related experience required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Senior Administrative Leadership: 15+ years of experience in a senior management role with demonstrated experience driving impact in a large, complex organization, relevant to academia. Experience or demonstrated ability to manage, lead, and improve the efficiency of finance, operations, and
capital planning. An experienced leader of senior professionals with strong leadership skills and demonstrated success building and working effectively in teams, as well as a professional record for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.
Strategic Development and Implementation: Experience in leading a strategic vision, with the highest aspirations and ambitions for the quality and reputation of Wharton. Demonstrated evidence of the ability to develop and implement a strategic vision for the institution; to establish and pursue clear strategic priorities; and to deploy resources effectively to steadily advance those priorities.
Stakeholder and External Engagement: Possesses excellent communication skills and the ability to interact and communicate with multiple stakeholder groups, including faculty, staff, students, fellow Penn leaders, industry partners, alumni, Board members, and external stakeholders. A track record of developing mutually beneficial partnerships within a complex organization.
