AdviseTX Hybrid Program at Texas A&M University-San Antonio is seeking full-time, recent college graduates to serve as College Advisers who are highly motivated to increase college and career readiness and postsecondary enrollment among low-income, first-generation college, and underrepresented high school students. AdviseTX College Advisers will be responsible for ensuring students have the necessary information to explore the full range of college options, host events and workshops geared towards college and financial aid, track student engagement and programmatic milestones leading to enrollment, and more.
This is a grant-funded position. Grant-funded positions are contingent upon available grant funding.
Responsibilities:
Serve in a hybrid – in-person/on-site and virtual- capacity leading efforts to increase college preparation and enrollment rates at 1-2 high schools in the San Antonio area
Provide one-on-one admissions and financial aid advisement to any student or family seeking assistance, virtually or in-person.
Help students complete and submit admissions and financial aid applications.
Develop a comprehensive college timeline, including application deadlines for admissions and financial aid for each student.
Leverage technology to increase communication with students and individualize advising services. Utilize various digital tools for 1:1 advising, such as video conferencing, text messaging, email, artificial intelligence (AI), and phone calls.
Visit classrooms, assemblies, and student organization meetings to offer college advising services and emphasize the importance of post-secondary education.
Establish an online presence (e.g., social media, website, blog) with students to communicate reminders and announcements while maintaining a professional demeanor and boundaries.
Work to engage families or guardians in support of their students’ college-going outcomes as appropriate.
Organize events and activities that encourage students and their families to consider, plan for, and apply to colleges and universities.
Collaborate with school personnel to promote the college-going culture at the school, including but not limited to organizing a Decision Day event to celebrate the college-going decisions of graduating seniors.
Collaborate with local community groups and other social-service providers to offer group events outside the school setting and community service hours.
Assess, in consultation with the AdviseTX Director and partner school personnel, the needs of each school and adapt programs and activities to meet these needs.
Establish productive working relationships with principals, counselors, and teachers in assigned partner school/districts.
Participate in extra-curricular activities of the school site or community which empower students, build relationships, and contribute to the college-going culture
Record up-to-date service activity data using the College Advising Corps’ web-based system, GRACE.
Submit progress reports to the AdviseTX Director documenting progress and outcome data.
Helps organize, provide support for, and attend evening and weekend events organized by other Advisers.
Assists in the efforts of other AdviseTX Advisers within the service area and in the assessment and long-term sustainability of the program.
Learn and Utilize ADVI – an AI Chatbot used to assist students in the college admissions process, also streamlining communication between Adviser and student.
Maintains expertise in admissions and financial aid advising.
REPRESENT AMERICORPS
AmeriCorps is a National Non-Profit Organization that partners with College Advising Corps; all Advisers with the AdviseTX Texas A&M San Antonio Chapter are AmeriCorps Members.
Display the AmeriCorps logo at your service site.
Provide direct service at your service site, and log hours accurately in the AmeriCorps online reporting system.
Adhere to all guidelines of AmeriCorps and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Serve in other volunteer opportunities at the direction of the program director.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Experience working with high school students.
Experience working with first-generation college students and/or students from underserved backgrounds, such as in college admissions or other advising or mentoring programs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Some travel is required.
Ability to coordinate and attend events and meetings at times beyond usual working hours.
Exceptional interpersonal skills and a commitment to representing College Advising Corps with enthusiasm, warmth, and professionalism.
Familiarity with various communications platforms, web technology, and Microsoft Office.
Outstanding written and oral communication skills, with exceptional phone manners.
The ability to interface with high school students and inspire and mentor them.
The ability to thrive in a fast-paced, do-it-yourself, start-up environment.
The capacity to multitask and manage multiple projects and assignments, often with competing deadlines.
Ability to work as a regional/off-site team member in a dynamic organization, possessing a positive attitude and excellent customer service orientation.
Employment will begin with a required training period of approximately two to three weeks in August at Texas A&M University-San Antonio
