The University of Virginia Department of Chemistry within the College of Arts & Sciences seeks to hire a Research Technician to work in the lab of Prof. Linda Columbus. Research Technician employees provide technical support for projects and mentor and train laboratory personnel. The research technician will perform experiments, maintain the laboratory environment, and facilitate research progress. The research technician is expected to work independently in a supportive environment.
The successful candidate will:
·Perform laboratory experiments that include molecular biology and protein biochemistry such as PCR, bacterial expression, and protein purification.
·Coordinate and participate in a variety of routine technical duties by providing assistance to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, undergraduate students, and staff.
·Order supplies and equipment for the lab and maintain an organized system of operation.
·Participate in weekly group meetings and assist in evaluating research methods, procedures, and techniques, based on established objectives.
·Assist Principal Investigators and senior staff in developing new strategies and techniques for experimentation.
·Facilitate collaborations with other laboratories.
·In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
This full-time position will remain open until filled.
This is a restricted position contingent on continued funding.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor’s degree.
Experience: 6 years of experience in a lab technician role. Master’s degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
Licensure: None.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
