Job Summary
Serve as an editor and writer for the Smith Alumnae Quarterly magazine. Work as part of a team of writers and editors in the Office of College Relations producing compelling content about Smith College and its alumnae, faculty, staff and students that is distributed across multiple communications platforms.
Essential Functions
EDITORIAL:
Responsible for production and editing of various sections of the SAQ. Coordinate and manage production and editing of the class notes and obituary sections, comprising approximately 40 pages in each issue. Write and edit content and cover on-campus events for print and website as assigned and as time allows.
Assist in planning future issues; participate in discussions of content; regularly contribute story ideas and keep a list of potential alumnae to profile or use as sources for stories.
Serve as copy editor and proofreader. In conjunction with chief copy editor, copyedit and proofread online and print materials, including the SAQ, various brochures, invitations, letters and web pages produced by the Office of College Relations. Alert other editors and writers of changes in style.
Compile the weekly Notes from Paradise e-newsletter.
Update and maintain various online content, including the WordSmith list.
Supervise editorial freelancer(s).
ADMINISTRATIVE:
Manage and train class secretaries. Serve as the primary staff liaison to approximately 100 class secretaries, ensuring that each has the tools to do her job well. Write columns for classes without secretaries. Create and update class secretary training materials in print and online. Conduct webinars and/or conference calls for volunteer training and support. Ensure training is effective and meets volunteer needs. Think conceptually about the class secretary structure. Implement change when necessary. Seek new ways to support and encourage secretaries.
Manage advertising program. Coordinate display advertising program, including working with and advising advertisers, enforcing deadlines, sending invoices and tracking payments.
Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)
Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism or communication or a related field and three to five years of journalism/professional communications experience and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Direct experience with magazine and publications editing and production preferred.
Skills
Must have comprehensive knowledge of communication concepts and high-level skills in writing (from journalism to marketing copy), editing and interviewing. Must have solid organizational skills, mastery of basic computer programs (Word, Excel, Google Workspace, Adobe Creative Suite, HTML and content management systems) and ability to keep up with changing technological demands. Must also possess networking and interpersonal skills, creativity, initiative, adaptability, diplomacy and ability to handle sensitive and confidential material.
