The University of Pennsylvania (Penn) seeks an experienced and collaborative financial leader as the next Associate Dean of Finance and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Penn Dental Medicine (PDM or School). Established in 1878, Penn Dental Medicine is among the oldest university-affiliated dental schools in the nation. The PDM community includes 858 students, 495 faculty, and +325 staff who advance the School’s mission to transform global oral health and well-being through exceptional clinical care, innovation, education, and research. PDM’s impact on the Philadelphia community is profound, with a patient base of over 43,000 receiving 165,000 treatment visits in its dental centers and practices each year and over 65,000 hours of clinical care provided by faculty and students in community settings. PDM views research and scholarship as a central component of excellence in instruction and patient care; in line with this focus, the School received $27.9 million in research funding in FY22.
Job Description
As a member of PDM’s senior leadership team, the next CFO will have the opportunity to shape strategy and accelerate the impact of one of the nation’s preeminent schools of dentistry. The CFO reports directly to the Morton Amsterdam Dean of PDM and holds senior managerial and fiduciary responsibilities in all financial matters. The CFO oversees PDMS’s $130 million budget (FY22) with $30 million in clinical revenue, which includes operations, budget planning, capital planning, funding opportunities, financial analysis, and managerial oversight responsibility for maintaining and ensuring PDM’s solid financial position. The CFO will have a close working relationship with PDM’s leadership team and serve as PDM’s spokesperson to the executive and financial levels of the University.
This is an exciting opportunity for a technically competent, astute, and entrepreneurial individual with deep financial knowledge and an understanding of the dynamic higher education and healthcare environments. The CFO will be an excellent manager, communicator, and collaborator who works effectively with chairs/department heads, faculty, and staff to resolve challenges in financial processes that impede efficiency and effectiveness. The CFO will also assess and develop SOPs that are shared across departments and work with the senior administration and department chairs to establish key performance indicators that maximize the ability of the School to succeed in its mission. The CFO must maintain a commitment to the highest ethical and professional standards while consistently exercising sound judgment.
The ideal candidate for CFO will possess strong financial skills, including an understanding of academic and clinical budgets and knowledge of clinical operations and finances. They will be inclined toward action while being flexible and comfortable working in ambiguity. They will be data-driven but not risk-averse and must be able to encourage trust and transparency through their actions. The ideal candidate will have a successful track record of leading and motivating a staff of highly motivated professionals and administrative personnel.
Education:
The successful candidate will hold a master’s degree or more and over 10 years of progressively responsible strategic leadership experience overseeing financial and administrative functions within a university setting. An MBA is preferred.
Professional Experience/Qualifications:
A successful Associate Dean/CFO will be sensitive to and able to adapt to the unique culture of a university environment with both its spirit of academic independence as well as administrative constraints.
The School of Dental Medicine requires an Associate Dean/CFO with vision, proven leadership ability and a strategic and innovative thinker. This position requires strong negotiation, communication and listening skills. The incumbent must have a strong professional presence and the ability to influence others. Proven experience in an optimization methodology such as LEAN, Six Sigma is highly desirable.
Additional experience/qualifications to be considered:
Salary range is $175,000 – $250,000 (will commensurate with experience).
