Colonna’s Shipyard Hiring for st Class Crane Operator at Norfolk, VA  Full Time

Steel America is seeking to hire experienced 1st Class Crane Operators for immediate work within our Norfolk headquarters.

This is a full-time position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our headquarters in Norfolk, VA.

Follow safety policies and procedures during all crane and forklift operations.
• Perform pre-operation inspections and checklists of crane & equipment
• Use horn or sirens while lifting and swing loads
• Maintain crane(s) in an ordinary fashion
• May be required to rig as work load dictates
• Operate forklifts and extended boom forklifts
• Maintain and complete daily crane inspections to assess required maintenance and repair
• Work with other team members to ensure tasks are performed in a safe efficient manner with required pre-task planning (Job Safety Analysis)
• Work with Site management to develop critical lift plans when required
• Operate cranes and rig various pieces of equipment on ships, off ships and throughout the interior of ships utilizing chain-falls, nylon straps, shackle and beam clamps.
• Assist unloading and loading yard and vessel supplies from trucks and vessels
• Assist vessel crews, and contract workers with tasks within the yard and dock
• Detect and report faulty operation of equipment and defective materials
• Operate hydraulic and friction cranes in a safe and efficient manner
• Inspect cables, pulleys and grappling devices for wear, and install/replace cables and parts as needed
• Operate traveling or stationary overhead crane to lift, move, and position loads, such as machinery, equipment, products, and solid or bulk materials, using hoisting attachments, such as hook, sling, or bucket
• Secure employee in the basket to conduct ship repairs
• Observe load hookup and determines safety of load
• Manipulate or depress crane controls, such as pedals, levers, and buttons, to regulate speed and direction of crane and hoist movement according to written, verbal, or signal instructions
• Inspect crane for defective parts and notifies supervisor of defects or malfunctions
• Review daily work and delivery schedules to determine orders, sequences of deliveries, and special loading instructions
• Determine load weights and check them against lifting capacities in order to prevent overload
• Maintain and trouble shoot various crane structures and cab features; hydraulic, electrical and pneumatic systems
• Work independently to complete responsibilities
• Must have regular, reliable attendance
• Control cost in assigned area of responsibility
• Other duties may be assigned as workload dictates

TOOL REQUIREMENTS

• High School Diploma or equivalent / Technical training preferred
• Crane Operator Certificate from a nationally recognized and accredited certification program preferred
• Minimum of (7) years of Maritime Industry crane operating experience
• Proven experience working with an overhead crane, in all types of weather conditions
• Knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with crane operations
• Must be able to work effectively with others
• Knowledge of crane operation, maintenance and repair
• Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.
• Must be willing/able to operate many varieties of cranes to include 60T mobiles, 15T electric-hoist wing walls, RT mobile cranes, and 20T track cranes
• Experience operating a 230T Manitowoc preferred
• Good depth perception
• No fear of heights
• NCCCO certification preferred
• Conventional friction rig operator

Position compensation is based on experience.
